This week, Georgia Public Broadcasting - your PBS station serving all of Georgia - takes to the court again with live broadcast coverage of the Boys and Girls Georgia High School Association Basketball Championships from the Arena at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth on Friday, March 13 and from the Macon Coliseum on Saturday, March 14. Georgia’s top Class A, AA, AAA, AAAA and AAAAA teams go head-to-head for the honor of being State Champions in 2009.
In addition to the live television broadcast of the championship games, GPB will also give basketball fans a chance to watch live webcasts of the games. On the day of broadcast, viewers may go to Georgia Public Broadcasting’s home page at www.gpb.org to watch the games live on the web.
Also, GPB will host a live webcast only of the GHSA Basketball Semifinals Class 4A and 5A Boys and Girls games at www.gpb.org on Wednesday, March 11 and Thursday, March 12 beginning at 4 PM until 8:30 PM.
And, for the sixth consecutive year, we are proud to present the annual AAASP Wheelchair Basketball Championship, Saturday, March 14 at 9:30 AM.

GPB Television Goes Digital February 17
GEORGIA PUBLIC BROADCASTING TELEVISION
WILL TRANSITION TO DIGITAL ON FEBRUARY 17
Georgia Public Broadcasting Television, the PBS station serving all of Georgia with nine transmitters across the state, will end analog operations as originally scheduled on February 17. GPB’s new digital transmitters will go on the air at higher power shortly after Midnight on Wednesday, February 18.
Although the national transition from analog to digital television has been delayed until June 12, the FCC is allowing stations under certain circumstances to transition earlier. After assessing the cost of maintaining a failing analog system until June 12 and the capability to improve the quality of its digital service to viewers, GPB officials determined that it was best to move forward with the digital transition as originally scheduled.
“GPB is committed to being good stewards of our member funding for programming and state funding for equipment enhancements that will make digital broadcasting possible,” said GPB Acting Executive Director Bonnie Bean. “One of GPB’s primary goals in the decision to move ahead with digital transition is to assure the continued reliability and enhanced quality of our services to Georgians.”
Since the national digital conversion was announced, GPB has conducted significant outreach with various community groups and the Federal Communications Commission to ensure that all Georgians are prepared for digital conversion. GPB remains committed to this effort and will continue to educate viewers about issues involved with digital conversion, including converter box connection, updates on the national coupon program and antenna and reception issues. GPB will also continue to promote its expanded PBS and local programming content available through its two new digital networks, GPB Knowledge, launched in the fall of 2008 and GPB Kids, launched in January of this year.

GPB Provides Multi-Platform Coverage of the Georgia General Assembly Beginning January 12
Continuing its tradition of providing in-depth quality news and public affairs programming, Georgia Public Broadcasting will provide extensive coverage of the 2009 Georgia General Assembly on television, radio and the web.
GPB will utilize its reporting staff for the long-running television series Lawmakers, which will be broadcast over television, radio and at www.gpb.org. Lawmakers is hosted by David Zelski and Nwandi Lawson.
Each weeknight the assembly is in session, beginning Monday, January 12, GPB Television will air Lawmakers at 7 PM. The program also encores on GPB’s statewide digital channel GPB Knowledge at 7 AM weekdays. For the first time, Lawmakers will be broadcast over GPB Radio each weeknight at 8 PM. Also, Lawmakers will be available live and archived at www.gpb.org/lawmakers.
GPB will have at least five reporters at the State Capitol. Listeners can hear the reports as part of GPB Radio’s daily broadcast of Georgia Gazette with host Ricky Bevington at 6 PM (7 PM in Athens and rebroadcast each night at 11 PM) and during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
GPB will also provide extensive coverage of Governor Perdue's State of the State Address scheduled for Wednesday, January 14 at 10 AM. GPB Knowledge will carry a live broadcast of the program. GPB Radio will also broadcast it live at 10 AM, and web users can view the live Webcast at http://www.gpb.org/lawmakers/stateofthestate.
GPB will also carry coverage of the State of the State address in a special one-hour edition of Lawmakers at 7 PM. GPB Radio will carry the audio version of the one-hour special edition of Lawmakers at 8 PM.

GPB Partners with Georgia Crisis & Access Line for Special Programming November 9
Georgia Public Broadcasting will present a special afternoon of programming in partnership with the Georgia Crisis & Access Line that focuses on depressive disorders and mental health issues on Sunday, November 9 beginning at 4 PM with Depression: Out of the Shadows. Following the broadcast of Depression: Out of the Shadows, veteran journalist Jane Pauley, who wrote about having a bipolar disorder in her autobiography Skywriting: Out of the Blue, will host a panel discussion with mental health experts to discuss the issues raised in the film. At 6 PM, GPB will air the one-hour documentary Men Get Depression.
GPB is also partnering with the Georgia Crisis & Access Line (GCAL) for the second time to create program outreach around Depression: Out of the Shadows. GPB first worked with GCAL in May of this year to present the programming during Mental Health Month. During the broadcast of the program, GCAL received over 400 phone calls from viewers seeking mental health resources as a result of tuning into GPB for the program.
During the November 9 broadcast, GPB will post the GCAL phone number on the screen throughout the programming so that viewers can call in with questions. GCAL is operated by the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disability and Addictive Diseases and Behavioral Health Link to provide toll-free access to service location and appointment scheduling, crisis counseling with licensed clinicians, and deployment of emergency services.

Men Get Depression is a one-hour documentary that explores the corrosive effect of depression on the self, relationships and careers through the intimate profiles of real men, including a former NFL quarterback, a Fortune 500 CEO, and Iraq War veteran, a university professor, a pastor and others.
