GPB Radio Dedicates An Evening of Programming To The Musical Legacy Of John Coltrane

On Friday, September 19, GPB Radio celebrates the 82nd birthday of the late tenor saxophone legend John Coltrane with an evening of special programming. Coltrane, born September 23, 1926, was an artist who was considered to be one of the most important and controversial figures in jazz. At 9 PM, GPB Radio will feature a special entitled, “The Making of A Love Supreme,” hosted by Mos Def. This program will be followed by The Jazz Spot with Masani at 10 PM and the 7th Annual Tribute To Trane, two full hours of musing, memories and music in honor of John Coltrane.

GPB is proud of its increased commitment to regionally-produced jazz radio programming. GPB Radio features Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland Fridays at 8 PM, The Jazz Spot with Masani Fridays 9 to Midnight, Don Kennedy’s Big Band Jump Sundays at 6 PM, and a new program, Ab’s Place, overnights Saturdays and Sundays midnight until 6 AM.

FOOTBALL FRIDAYS IN GEORGIA FEATURES NORTHSIDE-WARNER ROBINS AT CARVER-COLUMBUS

Georgia Public Broadcasting and SCORE Atlanta are continuing the innovative partnership FOOTBALL FRIDAYS IN GEORGIA with a live webcast of two division title winning teams, Northside-Warner Robins at Carver-Columbus on Friday, September 12 at 7:30 PM.

FOOTBALL FRIDAYS IN GEORGIA is a unique media-rich website that truly gives fans an interactive experience. The website features SCORE Atlanta blogs and real-time score updates along with live game webcasts and archived games on demand. Fans are invited to show their team spirit by submitting stories, photos and videos. Enjoy a Variety of Music with GPB On Stage, Ab’s Place, Savannah Music Festival Live, Harmonia and Coastal Nocturne

GPB Radio is excited to introduce several new shows to its weekend and weekday programming lineup beginning Saturday, September 6. New additions include The NewsHour, Travel with Rick Steves, Sustainable Georgia, Ab’s Place, Savannah Music Festival Live, Harmonia and Coastal Nocture. Plus, GPB Radio’s award-winning Georgia Gazette has now expanded to weekends with a new program, Weekend Gazette. Also, GPB’s popular locally-produced GPB On Stage moves to 8 PM Saturday nights, immediately following A Prairie Home Companion.

“Our audience doesn’t stand still, and neither does GPB Radio,” according to GPB Radio Program Manager Rob Maynard. “The new programming we’re bringing to Georgians is an even mix of the compelling information and innovative music performances that public radio does best. I’m proudest of the fact that most of these new programs are created right here in Georgia, which nicely balances our lineup of nationally-syndicated programs.”

Listeners can wake up, get out of bed and traverse the world Saturdays at 6 AM during Travel with Rick Steves, a fun show that teaches listeners how to explore the world smartly, smoothly and thoughtfully. Host Rick Steves welcomes guest experts to the studio and takes listener calls.

GPB’s award-winning program, Georgia Gazette has expanded to become part of the GPB Radio Weekend lineup. Weekend Gazette, hosted by Valarie Edwards, will examine the week’s important topics and provide interviews from people across the state. Tune into Weekend Gazette Saturdays at 12 PM and listen to the rebroadcast Sundays at 4 PM.


GPB Radio is giving listeners interested in sustainability and green initiatives in their homes and communities a place to go with Sustainable Georgia. This GPB-produced weekly program will feature interviews with notable Georgians involved in the movement toward sustainability. In addition, the program will feature information from around the state, a weekly Georgia Earth Newscast, the Isla Earth feature and even “recycled music” – songs with an environmental message. Tune into Sustainable Georgia at 12:30 PM Saturdays and the rebroadcast at 4:30 PM Sundays and 11:30 PM Tuesdays. GPB Radio’s local performance series, GPB on Stage moves to Saturdays at 8 PM, immediately following A Prairie Home Companion. GPB On Stage features many notable series and performances. September will feature Eddie’s Attic Presents, Evening Star from Sautee Nacoochee, and The Mountain Music and Medicine Show from Dahlonega’s Historic Holly Theater. Additionally, upcoming performances include noted musician and Twiggs County resident Chuck Leavell and A Prairie Home Companion regular Fred Newman.

Ab's Place, hosted by Abdul Taymullah, is a new straight ahead jazz show with emphasis on the emerging artists whose musical expression is influenced by the music of such mid-period greats as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Dexter Gordon. Ab's Place will also have artist profiles and artist features as the show takes shape. The program will air on GPB Radio overnight Saturdays and Sundays, Midnight to 6 AM.


To keep up with its audience’s increasing interest in quality, in-depth news and information, GPB Radio will add The News Hour Mondays - Thursday at 8 PM immediately following News and Notes with Farai Chideya beginning Monday, September 8. GPB Radio Program Manager Rob Maynard sees the program as an important addition. “Our listeners are actively engaged in their communities and with the world,” says Maynard, “We’ve always been proud to be associated with The News Hour on GPB Television and this radio re-broadcast is a natural extension of that relationship.”

The Savannah Music Festival has become Georgia’s largest musical arts festival, featuring world-class musicians and international audiences. Starting Monday, September 8, GPB Radio will host Savannah Music Festival Live Mondays at 9 PM. The series will be hosted by Rob Gibson and feature live performances by artists such as the Emerson String Quartet, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra and special programs showcasing Georgia natives such as Johnny Mercer and Wycliffe Gordon.

Harmonia, produced at WFIU from Indiana University, explores music from the Middle Ages to 17th Century. Hosted by early music scholar Angela Mariani, Harmonia offers the music of earlier periods along with cultural, social and historical context and evocative commentary. Harmonia returns to GPB Radio Mondays at 10 PM.

Night Owls can tune into to GPB Radio Monday -Thursday from 12 AM to 3 AM for Coastal Nocturne. Coastal Nocturne is produced in Savannah at the 91.1 FM WSVH Skidaway Island studios by long-time GPB Radio staffers Bethany Ford, Russell Wells and Eric Nauert.
